Plastic Wrap Be Gone!

Most of us know that plastic is one of the worst plights the world is facing when it comes to environmental hazards. Due to the inability of plastic to decompose quickly (takes up to 1,000 years) – so quickly is an understatement at best!

That said, it is up to us as individuals to make changes in our everyday lives to be mindful of what is going back into the environment now. For things that are already plastic – we hope for recycling programs and re-purposing to help minimize the impact on the environment. We can be more conscientious when at the store or shopping online to look for products that are environmentally friendly and being packaged in this way. We can also petition companies to be mindful of their production practices too! We have a voice whether it be through a forum online, a discussion with friends, relatives, colleagues, petitions, etc. and how we choose to purchase products.

We also have a choice – Purchasing choices in fact can force companies to change – look at all the information that has been shared about GMO’s, meat and milk alternatives, and the companies that are having to change their ways to appeal to us, the consumers. Many companies right now are struggling to reinvent themselves to do just that. So know that we CAN make change happen and make a difference!!! Even small choices and changes in how and what we do have an impact!

I found an interesting article @www.sciencealert.com about Consumers and want to share this quote and the link here: “We all like to put the blame on someone else, the government, or businesses,” said Ivanova. “But between 60–80 per cent of the impacts on the planet come from household consumption. If we change our consumption habits, this would have a drastic effect on our environmental footprint as well.”said researcher Diana Ivanova from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. I get that perhaps right now there is not enough being done and that is why I urge you to make ‘small’ changes in your own day to day lives to help make a positive impact. We CAN change and I urge you to do this with me.

I recently found a product to reduce plastic wrap use. It works great for me and hopefully you too!  Be sure to look for ones that are reusable, biodegradable and compostable!!

My niece actually recommended the ones I ended up buying. She’s in college, completely Vegan and actively seeks to minimize her impact on the environment. She often brings her own food to family events as most of the crew are carnivores. Not too long ago she brought some tofu wrapped in an unusual and pretty package. So I asked ‘What is that wrapped in?’ and she said ‘Bees Wax Paper’. Bees wax paper? What’s that all about and where can I get these??? So I went on Amazon and purchased the ones below.

3 Wraps Inside

Be sure to read the instructions. At first they come out of the package a bit stiff so I learned it’s important to kind of mush them up a bit – warm them and get them to be more flexible.  They smell a bit but it is to me a good smell, not pungent. More earthy / wax smelling and it’s very faint for my nose.

Assorted 3 Pack includes 1 small (7″ x 8″), 1 medium (10″ x 11″), and 1 large (13″ x 14″).  I use the smaller one (below image) the most probably because I don’t cook that much. Most of the time I wrap a lemon or maybe a bowl of tuna fish. The wraps clean up nicely and no odor from the previously covered food can be smelled if cleaned as directed.

I can’t share the medium because I think I left it at my Mom’s house!  Hopefully she is using it 🙂

Large Wrap

This one is the largest in the pack that I bought. I haven’t used it yet but as you can see it is large enough to cover a medium to large bowl, a canteloupe, melon, etc.

The company states that these are made of organic cotton, sustainably harvested beeswax, organic jojoba oil, and tree resin and the Bee’s Wrap fabric and printing are certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard. They are made from 100% recycled paper and biodegradable cellulose. When your wrap has seen better days and needs replacing the company recommends that you compost or use as a natural fire starter.  (more details are available through the link on Amazon.com posted above)

In other words, please don’t throw it in the regular trash in a non-biodegradable plastic trash bag. Here is a link to Wiki How on the subject:

Will keep on posting different products and ways to reduce our carbon, land, material and water foot print 🙂  We CAN change, we sometimes just don’t know what it is that we need to do and that’s okay.  You’re working on it and so am I!

Have a beautiful day and be kind to the environment, animals, yourself and others!
